WHO WE ARE

The Walter Battiss Foundation is a registered Non-Profit Organisation, and is wholly dependent on donations and sponsorships, in order to preserve the legacy of Walter Battiss in perpetuity.

The Walter Battiss Art Museum is administered and supported by the Walter Battiss Foundation.  The Foundation was formed in 2018, when it became clear that no additional government funding would be forthcoming to assist with the running of the Museum.

The Foundation's primary objective is to maintain and protect the legacy of Walter Battiss in perpetuity for the benefit of the people of Somerset East locally, and the Republic of South Africa nationally.  The Foundation is committed to preserving the Walter Battiss Art Museum and the Walter Battiss art works in the museum; and to maintain and promote the Museum as a tourist attraction in Somerset East.

The Museum houses the largest collection of Battiss works on permanent display in South Africa, including fifty books from his personal library, many of them heavily annotated.

The Walter Battiss Art Museum is open Mondays to Fridays from 10am to 2pm; other times can be arranged by appointment.
